I wrote Grace in 1985, 17 years old. It is a very simple poem expressing heartfelt gratitude for a true friend. Compare this poem to Faith, also from 1985, with a similar note of hope and love.

I’m glad that you are here to stay

I thought you would have walked away –

Like all the others.

But now I see your reassuring smile

I know you’ll be here for quite a while –

Why I learn to walk again.

You were there to give a helping hand

While I searched for feet on which to stand.

But now I think that I’ll be strong

Knowing that you’ll be there all along –

To keep me from falling again.

As long as this friendship is alive

I know that I’ll learn how to survive.

And learn how to hold my pride

Keeping my face against the tide –

Oh, fight I will!

And I will win.

This is to say thank you –

For all you are and all you do.
