I wrote She Moves Onwards in 1985 at the age of 17. It speaks of a defiant, if broken, heart that seeks to move on with dignity after heartbreak. Compare this poem to Freedom (1984) with its similar theme of heartbreak and loss.

Leave me –

If you so wish.

I shall move on

Even as the tide

That sweeps aside

Debris of painful memories.

I shall move on

Swift as the wind

That echoes my name –

No mountains shall deter me

No desert too scorching.

Oh, you –

You think your callousness

Will curb my heels

And subdue my gait –

Not me!

I shall grow new wings

For those that you slash –

I shall rise above your horizons

And soar towards

The undying Sun.

Leave me –

I shall reach my abode

Alone.
