I wrote this poem in 1984 at the age of 17. It is the first poem in a series called Desire and explores the nature of desire and longing. Compare this poem with Woman – I (1982) with its similar theme.

I’ll meet you tonight

In the darkness of my mind –

In the darkness

Of my deep desires.

I’ll meet you

In the mid of the night

Alone

Except for my passion

And your desire.

I’ll warm my soul

In the fire

Of your need for me –

I’ll answer your quest

And quench my thirst.

Is there any place

For me to run?

Escape from you

Is impossible now.

I’ll answer your call

The sensuous, gentle call

That pierces my soul

With the memories of wanting

And being denied.

There can be no denial now.

You say I am unique –

Your love has made me

Separate

From others.

And in my devotion

You are exalted to a God

Humble your body –

Yet uplift your soul.

I’ll escape with you

Anywhere now

Anytime you will me –

Escape!

To the darkness of your mind

To the hearth

Of your fire –

To the passion that is cold

In its naked need.

I’ll meet you there

Beloved

And I’ll stay

Till the end of time.
