I wrote this poem in 1985, 17 years old. It describes a passionate yet pure and innocent love, which is not just love between a man and a woman, but spiritual love between two souls. Compare this poem to Reverie (1985) about longing for the eternal beloved, and Faith (1985) with its theme ofย a pure and unconditional love.
He reads the verses of Khalil
And remembers a past life
He experiences Eternity
He cries tears of exaltation
And laughs in humility.
He passionately loves
The Soul.
He writes to her
Verses of prose
And letters of poetry
He exalts her in his love
And humbles her
In his innocence and purity.
She loves his verses
Offered so tenderly
From a lonely heart โ
They sit and dream
A world apart
From others.
He reads the verses of Khalil
She desires to fill his life
With her verses
And make their lives
Into a sublime poem.
They both cry tears
Of ecstasy
And passionate grief.
