I wrote this poem in 1984, 16 years old. It contrasts the heat of desire and passion with the coldness of denial. The philandering lover will ultimately return – the lost soul will find its true home. Karma will triumph in the end. Compare this poem to Denial, also written in 1984, with its similar theme.
I desire
And am denied
I wither silently
And you move farther away
Into the shadows
Of the past
Those dark gulleys of painful memories.
You escape me
And I cannot pursue
I cannot force you –
You know this so well.
Yet, in denying me
You deny yourself –
The escape is a fruitless one
You cast me aside
And shun your own soul.
You know I’ll wait
O Philandering Lover
Lost Soul
You know I’ll wait
Patiently for you to awake
And in the knowledge
Of my strength
I blossom into a living creature.
Not even your coldness
Can supress my fires –
Or sculpt me into
Sparkling ice.
Oh, no –
The warmth of my flames
Still reaches your frozen soul
You respond
Most reluctantly –
Only to withdraw again.
When the nightmare
Of ignorance
And denial is over
You will come back to me.
You will return
To the passionate in me
To the beauty of my soul
And to that spellbinding quality –
Happiness.
