I wrote Thoughts of Longing in 1986, 18 years old. As in the poem The Lone Dancer (1987), it describes the longing for a lover and the inexplicable nature of desire and attraction.
I know you gravitate towards me
I, too, feel a pull
Deep and mysterious
Tangible and yet so ethereal.
I only want
To hear your voice
Maybe hear a warm chuckle.
Maybe see your fine lips
Break into a smile
Amused or cynical
Or even dangerously potent
With silent understanding.
I know you understand me
My needs, my power –
My façade of self-control.
I perceive comprehension
In your brown eyes –
I wonder about your eyes
Warm with emotion.
I only want to be near you
Feel your presence
And be aware of the space
Between us
When we sit close together.
I wonder what it would be like
To hold your hand
Touch your skin
And find silent understanding
In the pressure of your grip –
Or maybe in your pulse
Hear a beat in step with mine.
In the mid of the night
I lie awake
Trying to recapture
The expression in your eyes
The curve of your lips
The nuances in your voice
And words –
Oh, these are my companions
When you are away –
If you knew all this
What would you say?
