I wrote The Visit in 1985, 17 years old. Meeting someone after years of separation can reopen old wounds and bring up painful memories best left buried. Compare this poem to Waiting for Reunion, also written in 1985, with its message of hope.
A stranger came to visit me
Across the silent years
To relive the memories of a dead friendship
And to shed a few more tears.
To feel the agony of betrayal
And remember the struggle for survival.
To hear the echoes of cruel words
That tore at oneโs heart
To understand the misunderstandings
That gradually drove us apart.
We looked at the past
With new comprehension
And looked to the future
With old apprehension.

Excellent Vanita, pain expressed in a delightful way.
Thank you so much, Steve ๐
Clever. New comprehension / old apprehension loved that twist.
Thanks, John, I thought that was rather clever myself, when I typed the poem after all those years ๐
