I wrote The Master and his Mistress in 1985, 17 years old. This poem describes the nature of desire, the joy of surrender, and the fullness of passion. Compare this poem to Thoughts of Longing (1986), which describes the longing for a lover.

I have been taken

By a master

A master, a master –

No less.

He took in full strength

He took but in part

A master

Nevertheless.

I gave in full warmth

I gave but in part

Let his will bend mine

While I rejoiced

In surrender.

I gave in to his desire

Yet I remain

The quintessential mistress

The quintessential lady

The quintessential woman –

And he

The quintessential master

A man –

The son of Gods.

Together we merged

His manhood and my womanhood

Like two young rivers

With the fullness of the monsoon

Flooding with passion.

The breath of my lover

Warmed my soul

My softness

Soothed his darkness.

Dark memories of pain

Flew away into oblivion.

Now there is only the memory

Of warmth and love

Of passion and strength –

The Master and his Mistress.
