I wrote Seasons of Desire in 1987, 19 years old. Desire ebbs and flows in life, like the passing of the seasons. Compare this poem to Autumn Again (1986), which compares autumn to womanhood, full of passion.

How the months have gone –

Spring and summer

And now the threat

Of autumn!

This spring and summer

I gave to you

This spring and summer

Were in your name

And though autumn

Promises to be the same –

Why do I long to cry?

The months roll on

And we change

The beauty past

Is only a thing to cherish

And I fear for the beauty

To come –

Will it come or not?

And now that the summer sun

Is hot

You kiss me goodbye

You know I cannot

But accept this and wait –

Knowing simply that you’ll return.

Return.

For the fires

Continue to burn

In your loins

For me.

And you will keep returning

As long as they do –

Perhaps winter will also

Be meant for you.

‘Seasons of desire’ truly captured so elegantly and succinctly, feeling the yearning. Beautiful poem.
