I wrote Reverie in 1985, 17 years old. It is a sad, wistful poem of longing for the beloved, of being united in an eternal, timeless embrace. Compare this poem to another love poem from 1985, Faith, with its theme of a pure and unconditional love.
Oh, I wish
That we could meet
Beloved
Somewhere beyond the Present
Somewhere beyond Time
Somewhere beyond Eternity itself –
That we could meet
In some misty dream
Somewhere away from these people
These alien people
Barbarous throngs
And milling crowds.
Oh, that I could rest
Your handsome countenance
Against my womanly breast
Warmed by your love
And the happiness in my heart.
Oh, that I could soothe away
Our fears, yours, and mine!
I would that we could meet
Clasped in each other’s arms
Two hazy figures in the distance
That belong neither to the Past
Nor the Present
Nor the Future –
Two figures, fused in silence
Standing like two young willows
Defying Time itself
And awash in the glow of love!
‘Would that we could meet
Once more
And melt into each other –
Melt into Nature herself
And return to Her peace
The peace from which we were born
And that we desperately seek –
That sensuous peace
That has evaded both you and me.
