I wrote this poem in 1983, 16 years old. It captures the deep suffering in a painful and impossible love, where the soul finally wishes to be set free of the karmic bond. Compare this poem to Verse to a God (1985), with a similar theme of despair.

Lay me down

Oh Love

Lay me down to sleep

The soul is tired

Oh Love

The soul is troubled.

Grant this one request –

I have found peace, in this

So lay me down to sleep.

The body has long

Imprisoned the spirit

So give me this freedom

Oh Love.

The river of futile tears

Will dry –

We will part in dignity

You and I

So let me go this once

My Love –

Lay me down to sleep.

Be compassionate for once

My Love

There is nobility

In sacrifice –

Help me in this one last journey

Beloved

Lay me down to sleep.
