I wrote A Message to the Unknown Beloved in 1984, 16 years old. There is a sad, wistful tone here, almost mournful and despairing of ever finding one’s Beloved. Compare this poem to the hope expressed in Faith (1985) or Waiting for Reunion (1985) .
Oh, there we stand
Across the chasms of Time
Beloved, you and I
Striving to reach each other
Yet unable to touch –
Unable to cross
The woods of the Past.
The thread of several lives
Is broken
And sorrow is now
Freshly awoken.
Perhaps in the next
Or the next life beyond
We will find each other
Full of wisdom and calm –
Wizened by misery
Stripped of youthful impetuosity
And finally become one
Till eternity.
